Oh the old “wired and tired” trick our brain loves to play.
This nighttime “second wind” I’m describing refers to a surge of energy that many with adrenal fatigue experience between 11:00 pm-1:00 am, making it difficult to fall asleep until it’s over. It can also occur between 2:00-3:00 am, disrupting the essential rest, repair, and cortisol rebalancing processes you need to properly heal from Adrenal Fatigue.
The physiology behind this phenomenon is an untimely spike in cortisol. When you’re in energy debt and you’ve been operating on reserves, it causes a cortisol imbalance and produces this frustrating “second wind”.
You can improve this through a strict wind-down nighttime routine and good sleep hygiene practices such as:
💡 Bed before 11pm to beat the coming cortisol spike
💡 Limit screens 2 hours before bed or use bluelight blockers
💡 Morning sunlight to reset your circadian rhythm
💡 Light activities like reading or meditation before bed
💡 Reducing caffeine and alcohol
💡 Aim for a consistent schedule even on weekends
There are many different supplement strategies you can take depending on what your cortisol curve looks like. Universally, magnesium is a supplement I recommend (mag glycinate or threonate), since over 50% of us are magnesium deficient and you get a nice relaxing effect when taken at bedtime.
Have you been dealing with feeling ‘tired and wired’ for awhile and the basic strategies aren’t working? Try on a few of the above practices to keep your cortisol production in check. If you feel like you’ve already tried it all, book a free consult with me to see what else could be under the hood.
I hope you sleep tight tonight and let your body soak up all the recovery magic it’s needing.
