Addressing Fatigue
As someone who encountered this with 3 different naturopathic and medical providers myself, I’m going to share why standard western medicine often falls short when evaluating for fatigue.
Here’s how it usually goes:
You go in
Get your vital signs taken
Get a physical assessment
Have some labs drawn (specifically a thyroid panel and iron studies)
And if all check out normal, then you’re sent on your way without any resolution. If you’re lucky, sometimes there’s discussion about your stress and sleep, but there’s no further investigation beyond that.
Why is this a problem?
🚩 Persistent fatigue is often the 1st symptom you have before a chronic disease develops. 🚩
It’s something we need to be more thoroughly addressing in healthcare, because it’s pointing to other larger problems looming in the background.
And, this is where functional medicine comes in to save the day. 🏁
Put simply: functional medicine is investigating WHY you are feeling the way you do. It’s getting to the root cause and working from the ground up to correct it. In addition to a full symptom history evaluation and assessment, there are several tests that I like to use to illuminate the underlying cause of fatigue: the Organic Acids Test and the DUTCH. This testing identifies which supplements would be most supportive for your unique case. I’ll be posting more info about these tests soon.
